People ask me which is better, inset or overlay, and the honest answer is that one of them is harder to build and the other is easier to live with. Sometimes those are the same cabinet. Usually they are not.
Overlay doors sit on top of the cabinet face. The doors and drawers cover most of the frame, the gaps are forgiving, and a good shop can build it beautifully all day long. It is the right call for most kitchens, and I say that as someone who could happily upsell you on the other thing.
Inset doors sit flush inside the frame, like a drawer in a fine dresser. When it is done right, it is the most satisfying cabinetry there is. The catch is the word right. Inset leaves you nowhere to hide. Every gap has to be even, every door has to stay square through a Connecticut winter and a humid August, and the wood has to be chosen and dried with that movement in mind. That is where the roughly one-third premium goes. Not to a fancier door. To the tolerance.
You are not paying more for inset. You are paying more for the shop that can make inset behave.
So here is how I steer it. If you love the look and you want the piece to feel built rather than assembled, inset earns its money, especially on a furniture piece like an island or a hutch where the eye lingers. If you want a hardworking kitchen and you would rather put the difference into better stone or a better range, overlay is the smarter spend and nobody will ever call it a compromise.
What I will not do is sell you inset and then build it to overlay tolerances. If we take that on, we hold the line on it. That is the whole point of making it here instead of ordering it in.
